  • Assessor: Anthony O Donnell - Art Director @ d3t Submission: FUNGI TOWN This is an ambitious scene to tackle given the deadline. There are many good creative little elements to like within the scene. Overall the sense of scale was maintained well for a lot of the assets. The document is in depth and well written. The main element affecting the scale currently is not quite nailing the finer details of more commonly known objects. Anything that's known to a viewer such as the watering can and axe REALLY need to be on point to ensure the rest is accepted and believed by the viewer. Given their scale and importance in the scene to me they were lacking details to show how they're constructed and pushing the material work to really sell the wood of the axe handle and metals of the watering can. The leaf boat looks too much like a wooden row boat and not enough like a overlapped leaves with bits of twigs stuck through them to form a support structure and seats. The twig / leaf oars are more on point for the desired visual design. A good game example to look at is MOSS which does an excellent job of capturing the scale of the environments and how they relate to the mouse protagonist. An idea for final images could be inspiration from micro photography in how to used depth of field to further sell the scale in some shots. Tessellation on the stylised rocks and log is excessive. There's no great addition of detail or break up of the form making all that extra geometry to process largely redundant. The lighting and colour palette in the inspirational images were a lot more vibrant , saturated and colourful relative to the final renders of Fungi Town. Given the them of "The little things" it alludes to happiness, leaning the colours more towards hues / values that are more pleasing and cheerful for the viewer would make sense. Some of this would be also down to the lighting which seems to conflict with itself in the scene. The lit light sources say evening / night but the natural light sources convey late afternoon. Generally it's a cool piece with a lot of potential to spend some more time working up.
