  • Submission Title: Nature’s Resurrection Submission Tier: Search for A Star Assessor: Dominic Shaw Environment Artist @ Firesprite Research + Development There was some really good reference and research done for this project. You broke down everything that you needed to make and you researched how you was going to make it which is great. You have done some really good planning and creating asset lists like you have is a great way to tackle the environment. Creative Art You have done a nice job at leading the eye to the focal point with the use of the light shaft which is really nice and it shows that you understand composition. It was also great to see that you were keeping the values of the level in mind in your documentation has values are really important and often overlooked! Technical Art I think you have a good understanding of game art workflows and I like that you used vertex painting in the environment. I think you should a good zbrush pipeline and I would keep at it with these sort of props, I really like the tower bell that you made is a great hero asset! I would also like to say well done on tackling the Jesus sculpt, character sculpting is hard as you really have to understand anatomy, so doing this whilst also doing a full environment is a big achievement. Documentation You have provided a really good breakdown of how you did this project and you have referenced a lot of artist that inspired you which is great. You showed a good breakdown of your zbrush workflow and it was nice to see that you were looking at proper reference when making these assets. I really like that you kept the values of the level in mind and I think you have a done a great job on this, the thumbnails are easy to read which is what you want to see. I also like that you reflected on the issues that you had whilst making this environment as we all run into problems and it’s importing to reflect on your own work has this is how you improve. One thing that may help with over scoping projects is to make a time plan for your assets so you know how much time each task should take you. I use a program called ‘trello’ that I then link up to a calendar called ‘Planyway’ this is a great to keep track of your times. This will hopefully also fix the UV issues you had had if you plan the right time you won’t be in a such a rush, just think quality over quantity. The reason a lot of artist do diorama’s rather than full environments is for this exact reason. Final Presentation I think you have done a great job since you only have one year of working on environments so you should be really proud of yourself! The final images are all readable and I like the composition that you have in these images. Seeing you worry about values and composition throughout the environment is a really good sign as it shows you understand art fundamentals which will really help your 3D art.
  • Assessor: Anthony O Donnell - Art Director @d3t The document and write up was well put together and informative. The wide breadth of reference material to inform many aspects of the piece was good to see. The breakdowns were clear and concise. The volumetric lighting is a bit heavy handed but overall the lighting was managed well to control values and keep the focus where it needs to be within the image. This was planned from the start and tracked well by the artists throughout the production phase. They kept focused on the goal. The kit based approach was applied well within the scene. Given the theme of "The Power of Nature" more foliage could have been placed around to really sell this idea. and have a higher ratio of foliage to man made surfaces visible. As it is now it reads as a derelict church. The reference images do have some examples of this higher ratio of vegetation vs man made structures.
