  • You mentioned you had 'little knowledge of VFX software' and wanted to learn Niagara. It looks like you've achieved exactly that, and it's a really awesome start to VFX Charlie! The curl noise movement on the inner portal swirl is nice. To push this further I'd of added some light sources from the portal to make it more grounded within the environment, a subtle build up of camera shake to emphasise the portal building up before a impactful bang, some slight refraction within the centre, a rotating wispy ethereal plasma texture to move along side the curl noise particles to give it more depth, and use some of those awesome rock assets you created to float around the environment. If I was to present this for a VFX showreel I'd make the portal the main focus from a few angles showing only that. The zoomed in shot between 0:50 - 1:33 is presented very well for example. I'd only include the rest of the environment if the portal was interacting with it in some way such as sucking the house into it, or creating a shockwave that destroys the house. Your documentation has a detailed breakdown, and strongly shows your thought process throughout the project. Nice work overall Charlie, I can't wait to see more of your VFX work!
