- A good start in your character development, but please don’t ever feel you don’t improve. Each character you learn something and grow as an artist. Just keep practising!
- good to see that you put a lot of thought into the characters purpose + why they look how they do. final shots are very difficult to see, just a bit too dark. the poses are good though. topology is pretty good, couldve been a bit higher poly i think! would've liked to see you talk about the images you included in your essay rather than have to access them separately.
- Hi Elmo, nice job finishing for the deadline. I don't have too much to say about the character, you seem to already be aware of your weaknesses and where you need to spend time improving. I do have some general feedback though. Presentation - The lighting is far too dark, and it's hard to make out what you did on your character since so much is hidden in shadow. Concept - I recommend focusing your time on modelling, anatomy, texturing, etc, over concepting or designing a character. There are many very talented artists out there that you can use as a concept to model from, and their concepts will be much stronger as a base, which will improve your work. Most characters you will create in the industry will be designed by a concept artist, so learning how to take a concept and translate it into 3D is a good skill to show off. Don't be so focused on making a cool character design or story, focus on executing the 3D work to the highest level possible. Once you master sculpting and the character workflow to an industry standard level, then I would recommend pursuing that passion again and create your stories and worlds; I'm sure at that time you'll be in a much better position to realize them to a fuller extent. Materials - Overall, the character is pretty flat. Adding armor, clothes, shells from different bugs he killed, etc, would help provide material breakup and color differences. I would also analyze the material of the reference bugs you have on Pinterest and try and get the same properties as they have - the right level of shininess, iridescent coloring, and patterning. Going Forward - Based on your summary, I recommend focusing your time learning human anatomy. Find a concept online that has a variety of elements you can focus on - anatomy, materials/texturing, and a bit of complexity (nothing too crazy complicated though), and do that concept. Look at other top artists work that is in a similar style, and match or exceed their quality. Find what works in their work, and translate it to your own to learn from. Best of luck on your next project!
