As one of the Asian game designers right now living in the United States, my community and I are furious about what Asians have suffered this year. Maybe it is time to show our anger, attitude, and power, telling everyone that Asian people should not be treated like that. As a media about interaction, the game could show our emotion, the game should show our feeling, and the game would show our voice. That is why this game jam exists. If you want to contribute and stand with all Asians, please join in!

Stop Asian Hate Game Jam is a 4-day jam, running from 05/24 to 05/28. It aims to use games, the powerful media tool, to spread the voice of #StopAsianHate.

Game Theme:

Basically, any game that shows sympathy to Asians would be good. Here are some directions that may help participants to think:

1) Against hostility towards Asian and Asian American groups

2) Highlights/Popularization of Asian culture

3) Expression of Asian identities and experiences

Rules

  1. All groups of all identities are welcomed. No matter who you are and whether you are a game designer.
  2. All game genres are welcomed. No matter single player, multiplayer, or even non-digital games.
  3. You can either form a team or work alone. There is no limit on team size.

FAQ

Q: What is the game jam, and how it works?

A: The game jam aims to make a game in a short period of time about a specific theme. It is not a competition nor a serious event so, TAKE IT EASY!

Q: Can I join in even though I am totally new about making games?

A: Absolutely! There is no ranking for this event and what is more important is to stand out and shout out our voice. If you cannot code, do it with an editor or blueprint. If you cannot draw, do it with the simplest cube and sphere. If the game is very polished, this is fantastic. If the game is not that juicy, it can still be a good game.

Q: What tools can I use to make a game?

A: There are lots of ways to make a game.

  • The two most common engines that game designers would use are Unity and Unreal, you can make games with those two engines and they have a lot of free assets.
  • For the visual novel genre, you can use Twine to make an interactive words game.
  • RPG Maker is also a good tool to make the adventure game.
  • If you are not familiar with any software, you can make a board game with only paper and pen. Making a game is not that hard, just try it and enjoy it!

Q: Who we are?

A: We are students from NYU Game Center and this event is 100% volunteer and nonprofit. We do it to show our opinion and protect who we care about by making games.
