Join in on the fun with the Escape 2024 Game Jam! It’s a great opportunity to show off your game developing chops, and for the first time ever, it’s open to the public! Top game teams win amazing prizes and have their games showcased at Escape!
We're keen to see what you're made of, but first, we need to get some of the boring stuff out of the way...
General info
- The Game Jam will kick off on 8 August 2024. The theme will be revealed on this day, and you will have until 25 August to develop and submit your game
- Keep your eyes on the Announcements forum. All relevant information will be posted there, including the theme reveal recap in case you miss the official event. Important communication will also be sent via email
- Teams can be formed ahead of time, or if you're not sure who to team up with you can post in the community forum!
- The top 5 teams will receive free tickets and will exhibit their games at Escape 2024. If you can't be there in person we'll set up your exhibit on behalf of your team.
- Winners will be announced during the Escape 2024 conference, so make sure you're there!
Prizes
The top 3 teams will receive prizes of increasing value. We can't tell you what they are but we can promise they're cool!
Important rules
- Conduct yourselves professionally. We're all here to have a good time and build a sense of community! The jam will be made up of people of all skill levels, including more seasoned developers as well as complete newbies, coders, and non-coders. Let's give positive criticism and feedback to help each other grow, while abstaining from being overly critical and/ or rude
- You're only allowed to start working on your game as soon when the Game Jam officially kicks off and the theme is revealed on 8 August 2024. We've carefully decided on the duration of the Jam to give everyone of all skill levels a chance to finish their creations. We do however encourage people to start playing around with the engines they've decided on so that they can focus on making their games during the Jam instead of fighting with the tools then
- You're allowed to use snippets of code that you wrote prior to the Jam, as long as you're not copy / pasting an entire project!
- Teams must be made up of at least 2 people, and have a maximum of 4 members. We encourage the more seasoned game jammers to invite some of the newer jammers to their teams instead of clumping up all the experience in one team. That way everyone gets to learn and have fun!
- The jam ends on 25 August 2024 at midnight. STRICTLY NO SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ALLOWED AFTER THIS PERIOD
- You can use any engine you want, as long as your game is able to be built as a standalone product, meaning that your game should run on the respective platforms without needing another program to run them in. This means that engines such as Roblox and CORE are out of the equation
- You can export your game for as many platforms as you want, but a WEB build is mandatory! This will also allow everyone to play your games with ease, resulting in more players and votes. Unity, GODOT, and PICO-8 are great for game jams and allow you to export a WEB build with the press of a button
- Due to the nature of BBD's grad program, BBD Graduate developers may only team up with other BBD graduate developers!
FAQs
Q: I don't have a team yet, what do I do?
A: If you're not sure who to team up with you can use the "Looking For Group" forum.
Q: I'm stuck with an issue in my game. Can I get help from other teams / jammers?
A: Certainly! Head on over to the "Help Needed" forum, and post your technical / non-technical questions. We encourage all jammers to share their knowledge and skills and help each other out.
Q: I've joined, now what?
A: You can start making some noise on X using #Escape2024GameJam. We look forward to seeing everyone's games!
Q: How will the games be judged?
A: After submissions close, the jam will be made public and voting / rating will start. During this time, a panel of judges will also rate the submissions. The top 5 games will then be showcased at Escape 2024, and voting will open to the attendees.
