Jesus loves you, visitor of my Game Jam! Phil. 4:13
This game jam is over. Congrats to chapankorn for the winning submission, and thanks to everyone for participating!
Wow, a text field. cool. Can I do emojis, too? 👋🏻 Yep, that works. I also can do formatting, as well, so that's nice. How about GIFS? Maybe I should hold off on that; I'd better not push it...
Whoops.
Ladyfingers and Frigidaires! This is Timothy Green for TGif Gamer, and I've decided to do something I've never done before... because I'm bored and had nothing better to do with my life. Help a guy out, will ya? 🥺
Since I'm not a game developer (yet), I decided to let other game developers participate in my Jam and see what cool and awesome things you can make. It's gotta be awesome, right? 😁
📑RULES OF THE JAM📑
The rules are as follows:
- It's gotta be safe-for-work. Some suggestiveness and implied violence is okay, as well as mild cuss words like "damn" or "hell", but PLEASE don't show porn, don't add a lot of gore and blood, don't use strong language (mainly F-bombs, S-bombs, or slurs). NSFW submissions will automatically disqualify you from the Game Jam.
- There is no set theme; most anything goes! However, if you really want my vote, it's gotta be a game that I can appreciate. I don't have an all-time favorite genre, but I can point out some of my favorite games, which include SteamWorld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (the Game Boy versions, not necessarily the Switch version, though it's all right, I guess), Myst (yes, even RealMyst), Riven (haven't tried the new one, yet), OlliOlli/OlliOlli 2, all the NES Mega Man titles, Garry's Mod, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Portal/Portal 2.
- The less time it takes for you to complete your game and have it playable, the better! I want to see how well you can make a game in as short of time as possible. That said, don't submit games in too short a time, as I may suspect that you cheated. 48 hours is a good minimum time, though you can take the rest of the Game Jam and have it submitted before the Jam's end, if you like.
- It needs to be able to be run on Windows or Linux - preferably both. Although I do have an Analogue Pocket, it would be good if it can run without that needed. Web-based games are okay, but have a downloadable version available so we can all own a copy.
- I don't know if this is a thing or not on Game Jams, as I've never run across any games you have to pay for in one, but make sure your submission is free to download. Games with donation options are okay, but make sure there's a free tier so those without money can play your game.
- Please don't use AI Image Generation or stock content (like from Pixabay) in your game! All assets should be made for your game. There is one exception - you can use another game developer's assets, especially if they're on itch.io as well, but make sure that they are aware of your game, you have the proper permissions to use their assets, and the creators of such assets are properly credited within your work.
- Have Discord ready, because I'm sending you an invite. TGif Gamer Discord is where most of the activity happens. If you don't do Discord, then why did you join the Game Jam?!? 🤨 Discord is absolutely free to use, with options for subscriptions and paid perks that aren't really necessary (but can make your profile look cool if you can afford it). As for TGif Gamer, it's a cool place to hang out and talk games, tech, and even Godly values (Yep, I'm a Christian, but not your typical go-to-church-on-Sunday kind of guy. If that bothers you, then don't join, but I promise won't bite your head off if you're not a Christian! 🙏🏻)
- DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR GAME UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO HAVE IT VOTED ON!!! Once a game is submitted, it is LOCKED IN until the Jam is over. Please make sure you have a fully-functional game (with at least 80% of the content the way you like it, and with most bugs ironed out) BEFORE submitting to the Game Jam. That said, I will allow for incomplete projects, but if you submit such, please inform any players about what to expect in updates made after the Jam is over.
- (Optional) Here's an extra challenge! Use something green in real-life in your game! It could be a tree, a frog, some grass, an Xbox, a set of bath towels... I dunno; just spit-balling here.
Any submissions will be removed if they do not meet the minimum requirements, and any submitters who do not follow the rules needed by November 14th will be disqualified. The Jam owner reserves the right to automatically disqualify any one submitter at any time, especially if they are trolling, using hateful speech, flaming, trafficking, found impersonating another individual, or purposefully submitting poor quality or distasteful content.
🤑PRIZES🤑
Okay, I was trying to come up with something that would be worthy of a prize for the winner of the Game Jam. I don't know if it's taboo to offer a game on another platform, but here goes...
The top three winners will receive a code for one of three games of their choice, courtesy of GOG.com:
- BIOSHOCK REMASTERED - I just got a code to redeem this game... and I don't want it. I realize that the Bioshock series was massively popular once upon a time, but I'm not really a fan of the series, since it's rated M anyway. I figure it's not as bad as DOOM... but still.
- TOMB RAIDER: LEGEND - This is another game I couldn't care anything about. I'm not a Lara Croft fan, by any means; I don't care how sexy she supposedly looks. I'm more of a Chell from Portal fan, myself.
- STRAY GODS: THE ROLEPLAYING MUSICAL - It's kind of a strange concept - singing your way to find out why a Greek mythological being was killed... but whatever. Then again, that's kind of like Crypt of the Necrodancer - but I still don't want this game.
I am willing to negotiate the prizes, but I can't fulfill requests for games I don't have codes for. I only have a handful of codes, and I can't guarantee their availability after the Game Jam's end.
For anyone wondering, yes, I am well aware of these games being offered on Amazon Prime right now, but for those who don't have Prime, or would like to gift a copy to someone, these codes will be awarded so you all can do whatever the heck you want with them. Also, these games probably won't be offered for much longer on Prime, so anyone who missed out can use these codes to get the games.
So, here's the steps:
- Submit a game before November 14th. Submissions will be voted on and ranked by Tim, contributors to the Jam, and Game Jam submitters.
- Winners will be decided on the night of November 21st. Each of the top three winners will receive a Discord DM from yours truly up to one week after the announcement, with a corresponding 18-character code.
- The recipient of each code will need to log into GOG.com. If you don't have an account on GOG yet, create one.
- On the top bar of the website, in a drop down menu of your account name, there's an entry titled "Redeem a code". Click on it.
- Paste the code you received from Discord into the field and hit Continue. Confirm the redemption, and it's yours!
- You can download the game on any device where you have a web browser or the GOG Galaxy app. If you have a problem with the code, please DM me back, and I'll either try to correct the issue or, if it's something I can't fix, award a different prize (which I will only do once, AND ONLY if the code I sent can't be redeemed. My decision will be final). The code you get will be available to redeem for only a short time, so don't wait on redeeming it!
Of course, you can give the code to someone else, but once each code is redeemed, they can not be reused. I promise it's legit; if itch.io has an issue with this, I'll gladly offer something else.
👉🏻I will also promote the winning game on my itch.io profile, and even encourage others on Mastodon and Discord to give it a try, so there's that, also.
🗣️The top THREE submissions will receive a FREE two-week trial to Discord Nitro! I will add the Discord accounts as friends and share with each of you a free trial. This can only work IF you are not currently subscribed to Nitro AND did not subscribe to it within the last 30 days - if either is the case, I will more than likely give it away to others in my server. I'd hate to do that, but I didn't make those rules - it's a Discord account limitation. Learn more by clicking this link.
🤔Have more ideas of how to make this Game Jam (and future ones by me) better? If I think of other prizes to add, I'll let you guys know. I'm also willing to accept suggestions - leave a comment in the community tab of this Jam. As of right now, I can't give out cash prizes, but I'm willing to offer codes and links to digital goods (as long as it isn't from scam sites). Feel free to leave feedback in this thread about the current jam!
Let me remind you: All entries must be submitted BEFORE November 14th. Only submitters, contributors, and Tim himself can vote on the games. Voting begins after the submission period ends, and a winner will be decided on November 21st.
The purpose of this Game Jam is not just to award prizes, but to (hopefully) get other people's games noticed. This is a beginner-friendly Jam - if you've never developed games, or want to sharpen your skills, this is the Jam for you! 😁
