Guts, Glory, and Collectively Improving our GameDev Skills (that`s what it`s all about)!

Hello everyone! The first Tokyo Indie Dev GameJam Session will start from Friday, May 21st @ 9:pm (21:00) ~ Friday, May 28th @ 11:59pm (23:59) Japan Standard Time (JST) in Tokyo.

Game Submissions will be available from Friday, May 21st @ 10pm (22:00) JST

Overview:

A GameJam is an event where developers will be encouraged to develop their own small games OR work with a small team in order to build a game within 1 WEEK based on a certain, random topic! This will be the first of many events, so it should be quite fun if we can get enough people to join and collaborate!

This Game Jam welcomes all levels of experience and interest, from beginner to professional, with the overall goal of the event being to help& encourage like-minded people to create, collaborate, and improve their game development skills! The focus for this Game Jam isn`t necessarily to "win", but rather to just "learn and improve"!

To make the submission process simple, we`re asking all developers for this particular GameJam to post their works on http://itch.io and then just submit links to their completed projects by Friday, May 28th @ 11:59pm (23:59) so that group members will have an opportunity to play them and vote for the best game via Discord or Social Media over the weekend.

The best game will be selected by the players and community and will be announced both here on the Meetup Group as well as on all of our social media channels. Participating Game Developers are also encouraged to post promotional links to their online stores or original character products in their submitted Itch.io page links.

====== The JAM Theme!!!======

The Official theme for this Game JAM is "Fast + GARBAGE"

OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED ON - Friday, May 21 @ 9:00pm (21:00) via  TwitterInstagramFacebookPatreonMeetup.com and DISCORD right before the submissions start. No Advanced Notice, No Prep,  No Cheating!

Some examples of this wacky theme topic might be;

* Make garbage fast

 * A piece of garbage escaping imminent disposal

 * An ugly game where garbage is the hero

 * An interactive graphic novel about garbage

You will have 1 WEEK (5/21/ ~ 5/28) to complete your game because many of us have daytime jobs...

===========================

Your Mission:

As participants, your goals are simply to:

  • Practice learning new game development skills & techniques while implementing them into your new game project for entry into the Game Jam
  • Create a complete game (or as close to complete as you can manage to get it before the timeline) around a set theme while being totally creative and original with your ideas and character designs.
  • Play & comment on other people`s games to what new skills and techniques you can pick up.
  • Have fun chatting and hanging out in the community!

Requirements:

All you need is a free itch.io account to be able to participate and a strong desire to learn new GameDev skills! Oh, and some game development software/platforms like Unity3D, Unreal4, etc also help  :)

VOTING CATEGORIES:

1) Originality - We`re basically looking for creativity and originality here. It`s ok to watch online tutorials to gather information, resources, and knowledge, but the goal of this event is for people to grow and improve their own game development skills; so no copying, pasting, or simply reskinning online tutorials from online learning sites. Inspiration from other`s work is ok, stealing from other`s work, not so much. Make the project your own.  Also, don`t forget to properly credit any resources that you use.

2) Use Of The JAM Theme - Try to think of a unique way of using the Jam Theme in your game!

3) Fun & Playability - This one should be self-explanatory, but games are meant to be played which inherently means that the element of "fun" should be a top priority! Simple games are totally fine for submission, so long as they are fun! Before you submit the game, try having a few people playtest it for you.  Visual novels and C.Y.O.A (choose your own adventure) type games should be fun to play as well

4) Community Spirit - Community participation is also a key factor for this Jam, so please feel free to talk, communicate, give/receive feedback, so that other members can notice your active participation! This is a great place to make like-minded, lifelong friends, so please take advantage of the space.

5) Visuals -While this is one of the sub-categories and isn`t really as essential when compared to just creating a fun game, the fact is that most players will probably select games that are a bit more visually appealing than just a bunch of clank circles and squares (which are perfectly OK for this Jam). but adding color and cool graphics will definitely increase your chances of ranking higher!

6) Music - Again, this is more of a sub-category, but sounds and music definitely enhance gameplay in most cases, so adding some fool music and sound effects would absolutely rock things in your favor when it comes to higher rankings! But remember, the main focus of this event is to just have fun!

Rules:

  • HAVE FUN - Don`t just focus on winning. The main goal is to focus on having fun and improving your skills while meeting new and cool people who are on the same GameDev journey as you!
  • USE ANY ENGINE YOU WANT - You may use any engine (Unity, Unreal4, Godot, etc.) as long as you can make the game within the time limit, and it is playable on Windows, Mac, or a Web build.
  • WINDOWS, MAC, OR WebGL BUILDS ONLY - Ideally, try and make your game a web build and/or windows (there may be fewer Mac users available to play and rate your game). Since most people will have access to the web build, WebGL format would be preferable.

  • WHO WILL JUDGE THE GAMES? - Games will be judged by the public. cre8tive Media Vault will then play the Top 100 games and pick the top 20 (these 20 games will be featured in an upcoming YouTube video, announcing the TokiJAM results, the following week). All of the results and the winner will be revealed when this process is over.
  • NSFW WARNING - All NSFW or adult-themed games must have appropriate warnings on the title. Example: “(18+) Realistic Blood & Splatter” or similar. If you choose to go this route, please keep it subtle. We will disqualify a game from the jam if more than one person claims it as "offensive" or if it’s clearly too excessive. As this is a learning community, we may have people from all ages and backgrounds participating in this event, so in order to prevent any issues with future Jams, please keep things sensible and don't go too overboard with excessive gore or NSFW content in your submitted games.
  • DIY (Do It Yourself - Or With A Team) - Reusing code snippets is ok to save time (no need to completely reinvent the wheel), but this jam is basically designed to challenge your creative design, coding, critical thinking, and full game development lifecycle skills.  These will help to boost your overall points in the Originality category, so you should strive to make all assets and code yourself or within your team (within the timeframe for this Jam)  No templates or pre-build games, please!
  • EXTERNAL MUSIC AND FONTS ARE ALLOWED - Music and Fonts can be used but must be royalty/copyright free and properly credited.
  • NO SELF PROMOTION ( IN THE COMMENTS ) - You may not post any links when commenting on your game or anyone else`s and you may not post a comment solely for the sake of self-promotion (Ie. "Wow, nice game! Now please come check out my online store at the link below."). These comments will be immediately deleted and this type of behavior will decrease your Community Spirit score.

    However, we do realize that some of the participants may actually have their own online stores and original goods for sale, so you CAN add promotional links to your own original character products, and online store items on your Game Submission Page, but only if the product links are directly related to characters or elements that are in the current game you are submitting for this GameJam. This Game Jam is also designed to help Indie Game Developers cross-promote and market their original online goods within the community, so interactivity is encouraged.

    The keyword here is "ORIGINAL", as in stuff that you or your team has created.

    For pages containing store or product links, we will check each store for original content, so any store products or links to stuff like "Dragon Ball", anime, "Marvel", "Pokemon", etc that you as the developer specifically do not own the rights to will need to be removed before your game will be allowed entry into the Jam. No exceptions.

There is also a section in our community to post your links.

If you need help ask in the proper channels either in COMMUNITY PAGE or DISCORD
