Lovely solo RPG with a lot of delightful details to enjoy
Pretty nice trip, full of colorful artwork for our team to enjoy'!
I have been fascinated with this game since I first bought it in a bundle. It is one of the first TTRPG books I ever read (and I read it before I ever played one). The slick diagrams of gear and the tough language made it sound hardcore. "There's no saving throw in war" -- I didn't even know what that meant, but I was impressed.
That was the original edition of the book, and now with the Ultra Edition, there is more detail and more clarity even for a newcomer about what a session of FIST would look like. There is also new art: some of the style clashes, but it all looks cool.
I finally played it and it was one of my best TTRPG sessions so far. I didn't appreciate that it was so close in play to Blades in the Dark and other truly improvised, narrative-first experiences: the listed hit points and weapons had me anticipating more tactical combat. But if not "tactical," this does have an OSR appreciation for randomness and small hit point pools alongside the Blades three levels of success.
I'm really glad that I found this game and this hobby!
