Welcome to the Twitch 2024 Game Jam

Welcome to the first annual Twitch Game Jam.

Theme

This year's theme will be: "Many to One

You may interpret this theme however you'd like, get those creative juices flowing. We look forward to seeing all the great games you create based upon the theme.

Requirements

Do we have to use anything in particular to take part in the jam?

You must utilize the Twitch Game Engine Plugins in some capacity, but other than that let your creativity run wild. How you use the plugins is up to your interpretation.

Note that the use of the plugins is part of the judging criteria.

What game engines can we use? Can we roll our own?

The Twitch Game Engine Plugins are available for Unity and Unreal Engine. We also provide a C++ base SDK if you wish to create your own engine.

Note the final submission must work on modern Windows-based machines.

Do we have to work in teams or can we work alone?

You may work alone or work in a team with up to 4 members.

What sort of assets can we use?

You can use any assets you own or have legal access to use.

Can we start development prior to the start of the jam?

No, the game must be created during the course of the jam. However, you may reuse code you may have created in the past. We suggest familiarizing yourself with the game engine plugins prior to the jam so you can focus on the content of your game during the competition rather than learning how to use the plugins.

When can we submit our game?

Your game can be submitted anytime after the jam starts and prior to the final deadline. If you upload early, you may reupload a newer version as long as it's prior to the deadline.

Who is going to Judge the jam?

A selection of judges will be determined by Twitch staff.

What criteria will this be judged on?

Implementation of the plugins, general creativity, and interpretation of the theme.

Is there a Discord server for the jam?

Yes, we will provide dedicated text and voice channels in the TwitchDev Discord server for the game jam here.

Rules

To take part in this jam, your Twitch account must be in good standing, i.e., not banned.

You must be 13 years of age or older to take part in this jam. If you are younger than 13 you must have a parent or guardian submit on your behalf.

You may work alone or work in a team with up to 4 members.

One person on your team must create an itch.io account for submission purposes.

If you work for Amazon or Twitch you are more than welcome to take part in the Jam, however you will be ineligible to win.

What can I make?

You can make any sort of game you would like to make as long as you own the rights to do so. This means no remakes of existing Intellectual Property (IP).

Your game must be able to run on a modern Windows machine; this means, for example, you cannot make a 16-bit game that will not run on modern versions of Windows.

Your game must be uploaded to itch.io by the submission deadline. Itch has a max file size of 1GB.

Do NOT make games intended to be played on consoles (modded or otherwise).

Do NOT make games which will require an external account or additional download of some sort.

Do NOT make games which require access to external peripherals such as printers, scanners, webcams, etc.

How do I submit my game?

First, you must create a game page like any other game on itch. Direct link

Once you have created your game, you must upload all assets to itch as expected, as well as give a basic description of your game. Note Itch has a max file size of 1GB

Your game MUST be set to FREE (or allow the person to choose their own amount).

Your game MUST be set to RELEASED, not draft.

Once that has been completed, click the submission button on this page and follow the steps on the submission page.

I missed the deadline! What should I do?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of jams, we will not allow submissions past the submission deadline except in extreme circumstances (such as your game causing a bluescreen if you follow exact steps).

If we experience issues with Itch’s servers we may extend the deadline.

I need art or audio. Where can I find some?

There are many free assets on Itch. We suggest looking through some of the packs on Itch’s site and selecting ones that have the appropriate look and feel (and license) for your game.

Alternatively, here are some places to get you started.

Art Assets

Kenny - Kenny has been making loads of art packs for use by game developers since 2010; we suggest looking through their library as they will probably have something you will like.

OpenGameArt - This is a fantastic site featuring a huge number of different creator’s content. The vast majority of their content is under the public domain license, but you should always check the attribution request of the creator and include them in your credits if they have asked you to do so.

Audio Assets

FreeSound - This site contains hundreds of thousands of public domain audio sources, from sound effects to full music loops. Most creators on this site request that you include a credit in your work.

FreeMusicArchive - This is a site where creators can submit their public domain music that you can use in your game. Note most of these tracks are not appropriately looped, so some manipulation may be required.

Theme for the Jam

This year's theme is “Many to One

How you interpret this theme is entirely up to you. You will be allowed to explain how your game relates to the theme at the time of submission.

We suggest that you look at some themes and submissions to other popular jams such as the 2023 Game Maker Toolkit Jam to see how some previous theme’s have been interpreted. You will not be rejected or disqualified if your game does not perfectly fit the theme, however interpretation of the theme is a key element in the judging period.

What do the winners get?

The winning team(s) will receive custom controllers from Controller Chaos (CC), up to four controllers per team, one per participant. The design will be preselected, but the winner(s) will be able to choose which controller they want from a list of controllers supported by CC.

We may also promote the winner on our various social channels:

  • Tweet the winner of the jam with a video of their game being played
  • A stream with a rundown of the top rated games, with a special focus on the winner and runner up.
  • Invite a few of the teams on stream to discuss their games and the plugins
  • An announcement in our Discord to showcase the winning team, their game, and information about the runner up(s)

If entering as a Team, each Team must designate a “Team Leader” for purposes of the Contest.  In the event a Team’s Game is selected as the Prize winner, the Prize will be awarded to the associated team members once each team member has completed Prize Claim Documents satisfactory to Twitch. It is the responsibility of the Team Leader to communicate the result, and the requirement to the associated team members in order for the Prize to be administered.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any participant who incorporates any intellectual property or material owned by a third party into the Game does so at the participant’s own risk.  Without in any way limiting, expanding or amending the Terms of Service located at: https://www.twitch.tv/p/en/legal/terms-of-service/, which Terms of Service shall remain in full force and effect, if Sponsor is duly notified that any element of participant’s Game infringes upon the rights of another person and/or receives a legally valid request to remove the affected Game from the Contest because of such infringement, such Game may be disqualified from the Contest, as Sponsor may determine in its sole discretion.  Further, no participant will be eligible to receive a prize unless Sponsor determines, in its sole and absolute discretion, that such participant’s Game has been or can be sufficiently cleared for legal purposes.

WINNER SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION: Assuming a sufficient number of eligible Games are received, at the end of the Submission Period, a judge or group of judges selected by Sponsor (in either case, the “Judging Panel”) will review the Games received and select one (1) potential winner based on the following criteria: (i) implementation of the plugins (30%); (ii) creativity (50%); and (iii) interpretation of the Theme (20%) (the “Judging Criteria”).  In the event of a tie, the potential winner with the highest score in the “creativity” category will be declared the potential winner.

The potential winner will be subject to verification and compliance with these Official Rules.  The potential winner will be notified via the email address provided upon submission. Sponsor shall have no liability for any winner notification that is lost, intercepted or not received by a potential winner for any reason.  If, despite reasonable efforts, a potential winner does not respond within the time period specified in the winner notification, or if the prize or winner notification is returned as unclaimed or undeliverable to such potential winner, such potential winner will forfeit the prize and an alternate winner may be selected.  If any potential winner is found to be ineligible, or if the potential winner has not complied with these Official Rules or declines a prize for any reason prior to award, such potential winner will be disqualified and an alternate winner may be selected. Sponsor may successively attempt to contact up to two (2) potential winners of the prize in accordance with such procedure, and if there is still no confirmed winner of such prize after such attempts have been made, if any, the corresponding prize may go unawarded.

PRIZE: There is one (1) prize available. The prize consists of one (1) Controller Chaos controller  (up to one (1) controller per Team Member for a total maximum of four (4) controllers per Team, if participating as part of a Team). The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of each controller is $500.00.

No cash alternative or substitution of prizes will be allowed, except Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to substitute a prize of comparable value if the prize listed is unavailable, in whole or in part, for any reason.  The prize will be delivered to an address in the eligible jurisdictions.

GENERAL PRIZE CONDITIONS:  The prize will be awarded only if the potential winner fully complies with these Official Rules.  All portions of the prize are non-assignable and non-transferable.  Prizes pictured in point-of-sale, online, television and print advertising, promotional packaging, and other Contest materials are for illustrative purposes only.  Actual prize may vary from the prize pictured. All details and other restrictions of the prize not specified in these Official Rules will be determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion.  The prize winner shall be solely responsible for all federal, state and/or local taxes, and the reporting consequences thereof, and for any other fees or costs associated with the applicable prize.  Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, deduct or withhold the amount of applicable tax on any cash or cash equivalent prize.  The Sponsor will issue and file an IRS Form 1099 or equivalent tax withholding documentation for the retail value of any prize or other items of value transferred to the prize winner by the Sponsor in accordance with IRS requirements, and the Sponsor may also share such documentation with a state or local government agency as required by law. Refusal or failure of the prize winner to satisfy the requirements of all necessary and appropriate tax, withholding or other required compliance terms (including Social Security number, IRS Form W8BEN, IRS Form W9, or equivalent information), as determined by the Sponsor in its sole discretion, may result in the prize winner forfeiting the prize and an alternate potential winner may be selected in accordance with these Official Rules. Sponsor will award prize subject to any applicable withholding taxes, and the amount of the prize transferred, as reduced by any applicable withholding taxes, will constitute full payment of the prize, as applicable.  The potential winner will be required to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility, a Liability Release, and (where imposing such condition is legal) a Publicity Release (collectively, “Prize Claim Documents”). If any potential winner fails or refuses to sign and return all Prize Claim Documents by the deadline specified in the prize notification, the winner may be disqualified and an alternate winner may be selected.

Sponsor makes no warranties, and hereby disclaims any and all warranties, express or implied, concerning any prize furnished in connection with the Contest.  WITHOUT LIMITING THE GENERALITY OF THE FOREGOING, SUCH PRIZES ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AND SPONSOR HEREBY DISCLAIMS ALL SUCH WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND/OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

RIGHTS IN GAMES:  For good and valuable consideration, the receipt and legal sufficiency of which is hereby acknowledged, each participant hereby irrevocably grants to the Contest Entities, and their successors, licensees and assigns, a non-exclusive license (but not the obligation) to reproduce, publicly perform, publicly display, stream, exploit, make derivative works of and otherwise use the Game, in whole or in part, for any purpose, including without limitation commercial purposes, in any and all media now or hereafter devised throughout the universe in perpetuity.  The Contest Entities shall have the right, in their sole discretion, to edit, composite, morph, scan, duplicate, or alter the Game for any purpose which the Contest Entities deem necessary or desirable, and each participant irrevocably waives any and all so-called “moral rights” they may have therein. The Contest Entities shall retain the rights granted in each Game even if the Game is disqualified or fails to meet the Game Requirements or even if it is determined that the participant who made the Game is ineligible to enter the Contest.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES/INDEMNIFICATION:  Each participant represents and warrants as follows: (i) the Game does not and will not violate or infringe upon the intellectual property rights or other rights of any other person or entity; (ii) the Game meets the Game Requirements, and does not and will not violate any applicable laws, and is not and will not be defamatory or libelous.  Each participant agrees to indemnify the Contest Entities and hold them harmless from and against any and all third-party claims, liability, judgments, losses, damages, costs, and expenses, including penalties, interest and reasonable outside attorney’s fees and costs in the defense and disposition of such matters arising out of, resulting from, based upon or incurred because of a breach or allegation that, if true, would constitute a breach by participant of participant’s representations, warranties, covenants or obligations hereunder, including, without limitation, any action or statement made by participant while participating in the Contest.

PUBLICITY RELEASE:  Without in any way limiting the rights granted in the Game, as set forth above, acceptance of a prize constitutes winner’s permission for the Contest Entities to use each winner’s Game (if applicable) and the winner’s name, social media handle, photograph, likeness, voice, biographical information, statements and address (city and state) in and in connection with advertising, marketing, promotional, and/or publicity purposes for the Contest, Contest Entities, and all uses of the Game permitted herein, worldwide and in all forms of media and by any and all means and media now known or hereafter developed, in perpetuity, without any obligation, notice, or further compensation to the winners and each winner hereby releases the Contest Entities from any liability with respect thereto.

NATURE OF RELATIONSHIP/WAIVER OF EQUITABLE RELIEF:  Each participant hereby acknowledges and agrees that the relationship between the participant and the Contest Entities is not a confidential, fiduciary, or other special relationship, and that the participant’s decision to provide the participant’s Game to Sponsor for purposes of the Contest does not place the Contest Entities in a position that is any different from the position held by members of the general public with regard to elements of the participant’s Game. Each participant understands and acknowledges that the Contest Entities have wide access to ideas, stories, designs, and other literary materials, and that new ideas are constantly being submitted to the Contest Entities or being developed by their own employees. Each participant also acknowledges that many ideas may be competitive with, similar or identical to the Game and/or each other in theme, idea, plot, format or other respects. Each participant acknowledges and agrees that such participant will not be entitled to any compensation as a result of any Contest Entity’s use of any such similar or identical material. Each participant acknowledges and agrees that the Contest Entities do not now and shall not have in the future any duty or liability, direct or indirect, vicarious, contributory, or otherwise, with respect to the infringement or protection of the copyright in and to the Game. Finally, each participant acknowledges that, with respect to any claim by participant relating to or arising out of a Contest Entity’s actual or alleged exploitation or use of any Game or other material submitted in connection with the Contest, the damage, if any, thereby caused to the applicable participant will not be irreparable or otherwise sufficient to entitle such participant to seek injunctive or other equitable relief and participant’s rights and remedies in any such event shall be strictly limited to the right to recover damages, if any, in an action at law.

NO OBLIGATION TO USE:  The Contest Entities shall have no obligation (express or implied) to use any Game, or to otherwise exploit any Game or, if commenced, to continue the distribution or exploitation thereof, and the Contest Entities may at any time abandon the use of the Game for any reason, with or without legal justification or excuse, and participants shall not be entitled to any damages or other relief by reason thereof.

DATES & DEADLINES/ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF CONTESTANTS:  Because of the unique nature and scope of the Contest, Sponsor reserves the right, in addition to those other rights reserved herein, to modify any date(s) or deadline(s) set forth in these Official Rules or otherwise governing the Contest.  Sponsor cannot accurately predict the number of participants who will participate in the Contest.

FURTHER DOCUMENTATION: If Sponsor shall desire to secure additional assignments, certificates of engagement for the Game or other documents as Sponsor may reasonably require in order to effectuate the purposes and intents of these Official Rules, then each participant agrees to sign the same upon Sponsor’s request therefor.

GENERAL LIABILITY RELEASE/FORCE MAJEURE:  Each participant agrees that Sponsor (A) shall not be responsible or liable for, and are hereby released from, any and all costs, injuries, losses or damages of any kind, including, without limitation, death and bodily injury, due in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, to participation in the Contest or any Contest-related activity, or from participants’ acceptance, receipt, possession and/or use or misuse of any prize, and (B) have not made any warranty, representation or guarantee express or implied, in fact or in law, with respect to any prize, including, without limitation, to such prize’s quality or fitness for a particular purpose.  Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any damage to an participant’s, or any other person’s, computer system which is occasioned by participating in the Contest, or for any computer system, phone line, hardware, software or program malfunctions, or other errors, failures, delayed computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature.  Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, Sponsor is not responsible for incomplete, illegible, misdirected, misprinted, late, lost, damaged, stolen, or postage-due Game s or prize notifications; or for lost, interrupted, inaccessible or unavailable networks, servers, satellites, Internet service providers, websites, or other connections; or for miscommunications, failed, jumbled, scrambled, delayed, or misdirected computer, telephone or cable transmissions; or for any technical malfunctions, failures, difficulties or other errors of any kind or nature; or for the incorrect or inaccurate capture of information, or the failure to capture any information.  Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who is found to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest, to be acting in violation of these Official Rules, or to be acting in an unsportsman-like or disruptive manner, or with the intent to disrupt or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest, or to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, and Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages and other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law.  No mechanically reproduced, illegible, incomplete, forged, software-generated or other automated multiple entries will be accepted.  If a dispute as to the identity of the individual who actually submitted a Game cannot be resolved to Sponsor’s satisfaction, the affected Game may be deemed ineligible.  Sponsor reserves the right to modify, extend, suspend, or terminate the Contest if it determines, in its sole discretion, that the Contest is technically impaired or corrupted or that fraud or technical problems, failures or malfunctions or other causes beyond Sponsor’s control have destroyed or severely undermined or to any degree impaired the integrity, administration, security, proper play and/or feasibility of the Contest as contemplated herein.  In the event an insufficient number of eligible Game are received and/or Sponsor is prevented from awarding prizes or continuing with the Contest as contemplated herein by any event beyond its control, including but not limited to fire, flood, earthquake, windstorm, epidemic, pandemic, public health crisis, disease, virus, sickness or outbreak or other similar or dissimilar natural disaster; act of God or public enemy; riot or civil disturbance, act of any government or governmental authority, power failure, satellite or equipment failure, failure of telecommunications lines or failure or breakdown of plant, machinery or vehicles operated by a third party; labor dispute, strike, or lockout; actual or threat of war, armed conflict, terrorist attacks, war (declared, undeclared or threatened), explosion, nuclear, or chemical or biological contamination; or a government imposed travel ban, restriction on movement or gatherings, or other government imposed mandate of any kind, order of any court or jurisdiction, or other cause not reasonably within Sponsor’s control (each a “Force Majeure” event or occurrence), Sponsor reserves the right to modify, suspend, or terminate the Contest.  If the Contest is terminated before the designated end date, Sponsor may (if possible) select the winner from all eligible, non-suspect entries received as of the date of the event giving rise to the termination. These Official Rules cannot be modified or amended in any way except in a written document issued in accordance with law by a duly authorized representative of Sponsor.  The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision.  If any provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable or illegal, these Official Rules shall otherwise remain in effect and shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or illegal provision were not contained herein.

GOVERNING LAW/JURISDICTION/DISPUTE RESOLUTION:  ALL ISSUES AND QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION, VALIDITY, INTERPRETATION AND ENFORCEABILITY OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES OR THE RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF ENTRANTS OR SPONSOR IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONTEST SHALL BE GOVERNED BY AND CONSTRUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INTERNAL LAWS OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA WITHOUT GIVING EFFECT TO ANY CHOICE OF LAW OF CONFLICT OF LAW RULES OR PROVISIONS THAT WOULD CAUSE THE APPLICATION OF ANY OTHER STATE’S LAWS.
