There are holes in a wizard's brain that are just dying to be filled.

With spells.

The Vancian Magic System! You know it, you tolerate it, but have you really stopped to think about it? It's a classic. Spellcasters have a limited (but growing) number of spell slots they can fill to call on their reality bruising powers! Yet upon casting the spell, it vanishes from one's brain, so great is the strain of cosmic knowledge on the mortal mind.

The implications of such a system are often disregarded by the games that use it. So today, my fellow queers, I ask you, how would you fag up that system? What does it evoke to you, to your own experience with the labyrinthine ways of your inner thoughts? Show us, you have a month.

The Rules

Your submission must be a tabletop role-playing game (I include solo journaling games in this definition) or a supplement for an existing tabletop role-playing game that uses Vancian Magic as a mechanic. This means it must feature magic with the following restrictions:

  • Spells must be prepared in some way to be available to the user.
  • Once used, a spell must be prepared once again to be used.
  • The number of spells that one can have prepared at a time is limited.
  • This limit is represented by spell slots.
  • The slots may or may not be tiered.
  • Characters may or may not have the ability to infuse spells into items such as potions, scrolls, wands & staves.
  • Magic users may or may not call themselves wizards, and have beards, pointy hats and back pain.
  • You have to make it weird.

You are free to format your game however you want, but if you'd like some inspiration and an additional challenge, have a palette:

The jam opens on the first of March and will last for the duration of the month! Now to your quills, there's ink to be spilled, and lengthy treatises on the nature of thaumic energies to be written.
