This has a nice degree of polish, although the limitation of BASIC's speed do hamper it.  The random placement of the apples can feel quite brutal when there are mazes in the way - sometimes it's just not possible to get to it before it decays away.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Unfortunately, I had no time to improve it by the end of the jam

I liked it, has a good mood. No progress between levels though.

Cute and fun snake game! I included it in my ZX Specturum Basic Jam compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)

Great! Thanks

Thank you very much for your appreciation and feedback! Yes, writing a snake game can be harder than it looks, especially when dealing with BASIC :)
I had to cut off some features I initially thought of, in order to keep the game at a playable speed. There are many things that could be improved as I just finished coding it in a rush... maybe I could make apples lifetime proportional to snake length and try to optimize further the whole thing.

Bonus points for having a nice title screen and instructions. The game is even playable at first, as the delay in responding to a key is predictable. But as the pace accelerates, controls respond much more erratically, and I just started missing every single apple. Doubly so as they also start rotting away more quickly.

Good effort, really, but Sinclair Basic is simply inadequate for realtime games.

Love it and it's not that slow either well done, I tried writing a snake game from scratch ages ago it's harder than it looks :)
