itch.io Recommends: Games from the Halloween Sale

The temperature is going down and the air is chill. Tonight is the night when the barrier between the living and the dead is thinnest. If you’ve ever seen a horror movie, you know that you should stay inside tonight to avoid ghosts/ demons/ serial murderers and what’s better from hiding from the undead than a bunch of games?

You may have seen that we have an awesome Halloween sale going on right now with hundreds of games on discount. If that number is a little intimidating, read on to hear about some of our favorites that you may not have heard of yet.

Bot Vice

There is an entire legion of people out there who bemoan the “death” of difficult games. These are the people who miss the “good old days” and often pride themselves on being “true gamers” or some similar nonsense. If you want to prove these jerks wrong, show them Bot Vice.

Bot Vice is equal parts wave-based fort defense and top-down Contra with awesome pixel art and a thumpin’ soundtrack. The waves get more and more intense as you go on and there are old school boss fights for you to focus on. The design sensibilities feel like they would be right at home on a SNES and as a part of this, the game is best played with a controller. There’s plenty to love in here if you’re not scared away by the challenge, and with the smaller price tag this week there are even fewer reasons not to check it out.

Slayer Shock

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been off the air for nearly 15 years now (yes we’re all getting old) but that hasn’t stopped the devs behind Slayer Shock from creating a game that bares more than a small resemblance to the classic series. Slayer Shock puts you in the shoes of an undead hunter responsible for cleaning the streets of the undead menace.

There is also a lot of content here. Your nighttime escapades are never the same twice thanks to the game’s procedurally generated content, and your diverse cast of supporting slayers. If you’re looking to relive the early 2000s you can do a lot worse than Slayer Shock.

Qora

Qora is a game that doesn’t really make sense. On one hand you have a gorgeously detailed pixel world to explore but tiny pixels to represent characters. You have a ton of items to amass and collect but no real way to track them or a clear sense of progress. It’s a game of strange contradictions that coalesces into a unique experience that won me over. With this recommendation I’m not sure that the game will be for everyone but if you’d like a pleasant meditative experience you should check Qora out.

If you want to check out the rest of our Halloween deals, and find some spooky games of your own check out the full list here.
