Abstraction in TTRPGs, or RPGs as abstract art.

Although there has been academic debate on whether TTRPGs can be classified as art or artistic expression, this topic will not be addressed in this post. However, if we were to consider TTRPGs as a form of artistic expression, it is possible to identify various layers and even intentions that underlie this practice.

I aim to write a positive post, where I'll showcase TTRPGs and/or related products as a prime example of impactful media. These products (IMHO) offer insightful messages, encouraging constructive contemplation and sparking interest.

Initially, these role-playing products may seem like simple and unassuming tools meant to be used for a limited number of sessions or merely as a source of inspiration. However, their artistic value and expression can endure indefinitely. The author's viewpoint is reflected in the product and may contain a message or unconscious bias that is conveyed to the audience. I personally believe that semiotic tools, including the product's text, direction, and art, play a significant role in interpreting this expression. 

Furthermore, by understanding the individuals involved in the project, it is possible to extrapolate the context and social perspective that influenced its creation. Ultimately, while these products may appear modest at first glance, they can have a lasting artistic impact.

I believe it's crucial to acknowledge that the interpretations presented here are based on the abstracted artistic expressions of RPG authors. While these interpretations are largely my own, I have taken into account the broader impact that has led me to form them. While it's possible that I may have misinterpreted the intentions of the authors, I offer this analysis as an exercise in critical thinking.

When authors, many of whom are personal friends, share their art with the world, it's natural that they become exposed to various interpretations. I acknowledge that my perspectives may differ from those of the authors, and I am interpreting their work in an abstract manner.

This can clarify the reason behind the abundant production of games and content, even though a considerable amount of them may go unnoticed. Essentially, what we consume are not just mere products, but rather artistic expressions that we hold in high regard as works of art, created by individuals whom we genuinely admire (at least speaking for myself).

With this disclaimer in mind, I would like to explore and interpret the following examples.

Grandmothership

I was given the opportunity to work on Armanda's fantastic game, creating the internal art. It's possible that everything I'm about to convey can be conveyed through the art as well.

The game, which draws inspiration from a cosmic and space horror theme(mothership), is titled with a clever pun that involves old ladies in a cosmic setting.

In my interpretation of the game, I was deeply moved by the idea that growing old can be a scary prospect. The thought of living a life plagued with sickness and limitations is a fear that I confront on a daily basis. 

However, I also recognize that this fear is subjective and personal, and that limitations can be overcome and even redefined. The frightening perspective of aging is a socially constructed concept that is linked to capitalism and ageism - the idea that our worth is tied to our ability to produce and be productive even as we age.

The artistic expression in this game has left a profound impact on me, and I know that even if I only play it a few times, I will cherish and remember it for many years to come. It has encouraged me to reflect and will continue to do so.

Backpack and Dream 

This particular game revolves solely around managing resources, which are scarce and sometimes intentionally so. The game is set in a context that harkens back to the old school era of gaming, where long journeys and constant attacks are a given. The game world is portrayed as oppressively dominant, generating a cyclical and seemingly endless search for resources.

When compared to traditional vanilla games, which typically have adventurers pursuing riches and power, Backpack and Dream breaks down this notion by revealing the harsh reality of a late capitalist world in which most people struggle to survive and acquire resources for basic necessities such as food and shelter. This game can be seen as a critique of capitalism and played a significant role in my own personal development of class consciousness.

Into the Bronze 

By depicting a moment in history that serves as the foundation of both Western and Eastern societies, we move away from a Eurocentric fantasy trope that can be traced back to the Bronze Age and is characterized by sword and sorcery. The magic in this context is devoid of any fantastical elements and is instead grounded in reality, which justifies why it is not a recurring theme in fairy tales or Norse mythology. 

This game has allowed me to explore beyond the confines of traditional medieval fantasy and appreciate the nuances of different flavors. I still remember with fondness the day when I mastered the game through playtesting, and despite the passage of time, it remains one of the most memorable fantasy TTRPG sessions I had. The generators offer a fresh perspective, and we need not limit ourselves to the narrow, colonial portrayal of medieval Europe that centers around sword and sorcery.

Conclusions

These are my personal interpretations, presented in a simplistic manner. I could delve deeper or even offer my thoughts on other games or products.

I sincerely hope that my interpretations do not cause offense, as that was not my intention. While I do have some negative examples in mind, primarily from trad games, I do not believe they warrant any animosity. However, I believe it is evident what they represent.

One final point to consider is the scandal that rocked the OSR community a few years back. Having read much of the individual's work and internalized the reflection, it is remarkable to observe the semiotic and abstract way in which problematic or edgy content was incorporated, perhaps even unconsciously. While it is easy to pass judgment in hindsight, I still see similar situations occurring with some people.
