We received this question in another topic and we're putting it in its own topic in case you had this question also:

"I don't really understand the theme because I'm from Czech Republic and i don't wanna believe Google Translate could you please say what means Bystander please ? :)

Thank you in advance!

For our contest we are looking for examples when something bad is happening and witnesses can stop it - or can get help - or can do something else that helps. The type of bad things we are focused on are things that young people often experience.

Examples: bullying (some kids are picking on another kid) or relationship abuse (one kid is yelling at their boyfriend or girlfriend in public) or alcohol (one kid is drinking too much alcohol and it is damaging their life). In all of these examples there are people who either see these things happening or are otherwise aware that they are happening. We want to see what the people who see this happening can do - and should do - to help. The people who witness these things are BYSTANDERS.

When people are witnessing things like this and realize that they should do something that is called BYSTANDER AWARENESS and when the people who witness things like this do something to help that is called BYSTANDER INTERVENTION.

Please also look at the videos and the other websites in the BYSTANDER RESOURCES section of the game jam page to get better examples.

The topic is "Bystander" and you want games focused on "Bystander Awareness"  but sometimes it is better not to interfere so could I make a game where you are given scenarios and you need to choose between intervening and telling a trusted adult?

P.S: NO COPYING MY IDEA!

Yes - definitely!

Bystander awareness is about:

  • people being aware that they are bystanders when they witness bad things happening
  • people being aware that as bystanders they have options
  • understanding what those options are

Bystander intervention is about:

  • acting to intervene in some fashion (talking with a trusted adult is one form of intervention!)

Many people aren't always aware that they are bystanders to bad things because they may not realize that what's going on is bad - or they might believe that other bystanders will intervene instead of them - or they feel uncomfortable intervening in the situation due to societal norms or fears of retribution.

The goal is to help people:

  1. recognize when they're bystanders;
  2. to know their options; and
  3. understand how to safely intervene.

ok thank you
