7DRL Community Blog!

I decided to revive the community blog for the Seven-Day Roguelike (7DRL) Challenge here.

There you can share your plans, updates on progress (or lack of progress), helpful algorithms, screenshots of your game, and other 7DRL-related content!

Some years ago, we used to have this under 7drl.org, which is now long gone.

Unlike other jams, the 7DRL challenge is meant to have a stronger social aspect which is worth diving into again; it’s not just about the end result but also observing the creative process and the struggles of the developers.

Nowadays (2021) there are several venues for this including the roguelikedev subreddit, twitter hashtags, roguetemple forums, the itch.io devlogs and forums, but what is missing is a unified feed where you can get an overview of the event as it unfolds.

Of course, participating in this is absolutely optional, and depending on the spirit (and available time) you have for the challenge, you may rightfully decide to focus on the development instead of investing time in updating a devlog. I personally find it useful and fun!

Also, a single screenshot and a text blurb may be enough, so don’t feel like you have to write detailed posts (unless you want to!).

If you want to join please DM me on twitter @roguetemple with your wordpress.com email, or send me an email directly (slash@slashware.net) and I’ll set you up. :)

Oh crud! I missed this thread. The community blog in previous years was really cool, but I see this is just not well advertised and hardly anyone is using it yet. Wish it picks up more, and becomes a big thing next year.

But so far noone has posted more than one entry, they've just linked to their devlogs elsewhere. But you intended people post as often as they want, right?

Seilburg and I have been posting daily devlog entries for Portlligat on our itch.io game page, but the chance of anyone actually seeing them during the week is low. Feels lonely. I think a community blog feed is ideal, although twitter hashtags are pretty similar. I crosspost to another forum but it's a nuisance. I wish that were automated... i.e. if we could create a feed of devlog entries from everyone's itch.io pages and from every thread in this forum! itch.io does allow creating private feeds... can be they be public too?

I think the best scenario would be itch.io letting people post devlogs to the jam itself and having a moderated feed where they are all displayed.

We'll see how it goes! it seems we live in a different age of social media now and putting more burden on the devs is not ideal.
