  • Honk 3D is a sequel to the Gong Show favorite Honk, and makes a strong effort to follow in it's footsteps, but it falls short unfortunately.

So Honk 3D really lives in the shadow of the original Honk which was such a singular event that it does taint how Honk 3D is percieved unfortunately. The game worked right away for me and many others which is a huge plus and definitely not a small task. I am imagining that this may have eaten up a lot of the dev time. For what is present in the game, your movement always felt right, that you were moving where you intended, and interacting was the same mostly. Sometimes you would swing instead of eat, but that was about it. A bigger issue was that striking opponents didn't have a lot of weight behind it. The lack of names above the players also was a missed oppourtunity as the growth of meta-game attitudes are pretty huge in this kind of group madness game.

Seeing the inclusion of different minigames would have been a huge inclusion and really elevated the game from a finicky free-for-all into a really strong party game like experience. Including the original Honk game of "honk x times" while you can barely hear what is going on through the hinks of all the players would have been fun to see in 3D. Games like Simon Says, or Red Light Green Light would have been nice. Players who were defeated having more to do than wait could have been nice. Like ways to goof off, knock people around, or just be dumb would have been welcome.

Ultimately this is a proper base for what the game really could be, and which I would love to see, but it's just that, the starting point.

Elevator pitch
Honk is a game about futility and the tragedy of the commons.

Pros:
  • Well functioning multiplayer in a jam game (as usual :V)
  • That goose
  • Solid mechanical concept
Cons:
  • Lack of instructions
  • Would have liked more honks
Here & There:

Played this with the Gong Show and it was a good bit of fun, though if the streamers hadn't vocalised their thoughts it would have probably taken me a lot longer to get what caused the culling. Not killing people but removing their health bar to get culled is a cool idea and it was fun trying to chase people down and punish em for going for food. I'm pretty sure I read you say in the Discord or somewhere that the information stuff didn't get in in time and you're aware, so that's good, but it is pretty much the only real negative beside things that are inherent with multiplayer games like finding people to play with. Your goose is really good. Very good goose, A+ goose.

Online worked really nicely. Loved the graphics and sound.

I managed to get a partner to play the game with and honestly the pair of us were kind of confused. We could not work out what the rules of the game were? I'm not sure if there were any instructions or something I missed, but in the absense of them the game just seems kinda random.

The hit-reg on the bat felt really inconsistent.

It'll be interesting to see how this is during the gong show or if it makes it into Vinny's pack!

As usual I ran out of time to polish the "What the hell is actually going on" part, it becomes apparent pretty quickly with a large group that the least-fed people are being dragged away every 15 seconds, but with just 2 people it feels like a skinner box. I wanted to add AI to reduce confusion and make it pretty obvious, but here I am.

Gonna make a mental note to try this during the gong show, wasn't able to find any other players right now!
