Since I only read that teams are allowed I wanted to ask if it is also okay to participate alone in the jam?

You can participate solo as well. In the "allowed" section are the optional things (like participating in a team).
In the "important" section are the mandatory rules where, for example, if you submit a game with another engine you get disqualified.
