Description
My first composer jam! And somehow I only started on this two days before the deadline. Oops.

This track is meant to capture the feeling of exploring a long lost city that has fallen apart over time. It was kind of inspired by Tomb Raider but there's a more somber tone to it as well, making it seem like something tragic had occurred in these ruins all those centuries ago.

Hopefully the mixing isn't too bad. My headphones broke just before the jam started so I was mixing with only one side working.

Description of Setup (Optional but recommended)
Made with various Kontakt libraries and Sylenth for the pad and bass.

Nice soft opener, though it still has that midi cello sound - one thing to make strings sound more realistic is to overlap the attack and release so that the transition is more seamless in volume, otherwise you get this unnatural dampening of the sound from note to note on every note.

I like that the mix is balanced and not overpowering. I think that it would benefit from a little compression, and having dynamics that are a little more organic, which can be hard with VSTs, but it is doable!

Great work! Also, really dig the vocal part towards the end.

Thank you! Yeah I noticed the cello sounding weird with the note transitions at the beginning. Might've been because I got lazy with trying to make the legato sound natural, so it's kind of loud when it slides to another note. Still learning what's the best method to adding realistic dynamics and automation with these sample libraries since there's so many moving parts. I'll keep the compression part in mind too, something else I'm a little afraid of lol.

Well, I think the mix is just awesome! And ye, for sure felt those tomb raider vibes :D

Really enjoyed, congrats on your first submission! :)

Take care

Glad the Tomb Raider-ness could be felt lol. Thanks!

Awesome job for your first jam!  I thought the mix was pretty well balanced and I can definitely feel the lost and somber tones being conveyed here.

Thank you!

Fantastic arrangement and mix.  Sombre yet woodsy mood.  Your blend of natural instruments and synthetic ones is very tasteful and I doubt a casual listener would even detect any synthesizers used in this track at all.  You know how to make a nice full, juicy sound and it was extremely pleasant!!  I think I listened to it about 5 times.  Great submission!

Thank you for the feedback! I'm relieved the pads don't sound too overbearing and is somewhat balanced with the acoustic instruments, since it's easy to make it very muddy (I've done it way too often). Glad you enjoyed it 😄

Oh... It's been a magical journey! The combination of instruments, the magical melody and the slightly epic chorus is perfect!

P.S. The mixing is good!

Developer

Thank you! And good to know I didn't fumble the mixing lol
