This one fell a bit flat for me to be honest.

The menus are nice looking and fairly complete, but I found the font kind of hard to read. I did really like the ingame graphics. It reminds me a bit of an old Flash game- a lot of games in this jam do. I have a lot of nostalgia for those so that's a good thing. I did notice some z-fighting between sprites.

The gameplay is... just okay. I think the core look of hitting enemies, getting upgrades, and hitting them some more is decent enough. The pacing, though, kinda drags it down.

Having to quit a session and go back to the main menu to upgrade is super awkward. I really wish this was ingame or in between rounds somehow. This compounds with the odd difficulty curve- first round super easy, second round easy, third and forth much, much harder- and generally slow pacing to make the game feel very grindy and tedious.

Saving is nice, but in this game it feels like a weird band-aid solution.

I'm assuming the short attack range is to make it more of a beat 'em up, but mostly it just makes half the stage feel wasted.

The background music is nice, but the PC speaker ish sound effects are an odd mismatched choice.

Taking a step back and looking at it, this game is functional, and it has a lot of mechanics that could work. It's more of a devil-in-the-details thing; it needs some crucial tweaking to be truly fun.

In this game, the protagnist is unmovable like a tower and only able to attack left or right. This concept is very challenging for game designing because of the limitation, but still has lots of protential direction. This is what I can imagine: If the enemy doesn't harm the protagnist. With the existing upgrade system, the game probably can work like cookie clicker, a mindless casual game that brings player a joy of progress. Or, it can tune up the speed, add lots of enemy varients that only vulnerable to specific attack, then it will be an exciting shooting game. But for the current version, i lose interest after several rounds. Maybe it's better in higher level. The screenshot seems promising with massive amount of enemies. But i just don't want to play anymore.

The girl design is kinda cute.

Graphics are quite cute, the abilities are well designed and each serve their purpose, and the mechanics work nicely. For Thorn Rain, perhaps there could be indicators to show its range or where it would land. The pacing could be improved a little, I felt that it was a little too slow; combined with the lack of animations, my actions felt less impactful. In terms of the mashup and originality, I couldn’t find much that stands out.

Overall, I had a bit of fun unlocking the abilities and defending the kingdom in Magical Girl vs Forest of Evil, but it needs more to spice up the gameplay. I do appreciate that everything in the game is presented nicely with clean UI, nicely drawn characters and background which made it a pleasant experience. Keep it up!

I'm glad you liked it! I appreciate the useful feedback and will take these ideas into consideration when I update the game next (when the jams over).
