Use of the limitation
I wanted to make a game about someone who uses magic in a quiet, craft-y manner to help their community. I took the limitation of 'light is the way' as the definition of what form that help takes - namely, the creation of magical lanterns to help the community see.

I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, or how to get jars? But, the game looks super nice, good job

That’s really fair; my biggest takeaway from doing this jam was that I need to get better at tutorials (or at least get better at designing UI with tutorials in mind)! I think I leaned a little too hard on the idea of a magical language you have to experiment and fail in order to learn - which is not very user-friendly, especially for a jam!

If you (or any other readers) are still interested, the key clue is that the bees will look for single flowers on the board, then use the patterns adjacent to that single flower to make a jar. If there are no single flowers, nothing will happen, and if there are no single flowers with adjacent patterns, nothing will happen. So to make the most basic jar:

  1. Place a single flower somewhere
  2. Using a different type of flower, place a group of two adjacent to the single. The bees will fly to the single flower, the adjacent group of two tells them to make a basic jar of honey, then they return to the hive and produce the jar.

Thanks for playing, anyhow! And I’m glad you enjoyed the visuals, they turned out much better than I expected.

now that i’m actually seeing how to play, i think this would make for a neat puzzle game. like, if you in the background generated a layout and got some output, you could show the houses wanting that output and then the player could have to figure out an arrangement that would produce (at least) that. i’d play a lot of that

Yo this game is prett cool! I really dont see a single element I don't like. The only thing I didn't get is how the flowers play into this, like I have 3 kinds of flowers right but what do each one of them do? Other than that really good!

Thanks for playing! The different types of flowers are just to differentiate adjacent runes from each other. They’re like a palette of different colors to paint with, basically; they don’t have any other effect. I agree that’s a little confusing though, apologies!
