How about collecting fireflies or fairies in a jar that gradually increases permanent light.
Your game had a really similar concept to mine, so it was interesting to see a different execution!
The pixel art is gorgeous. I'd be happy with it for a commercial game let alone a jam.
I think the coins were too difficult to find for the benefit they give. Maybe a permanent bonus would make them more satisfying? Another idea would be to make the coins glow so that they're easier to find when you don't have a coin.
Yeah I agree that the coins were difficult to find, their main purpose was to get the player to look through the entire maze to try and find all 10 coins. Of course the game could also be beaten without collecting a single coin
