I am curious as too if the limitation means "only" 8 x 8 pixel textures, or "up to", meaning we can use 7 x 7 pixel textures as well.

Nevermind! Upon closer inspection (reading) of the limitation, it says "8 x 8 pixels or smaller". Sorry about that.
