Hi there! I'm Kenneth. This is my first ever game jam AND devlog! :D

I'm looking to make a simple game about a snowball avoiding obstacles and enemies that want to melt it! I'll be using LibGDX for this one. My main aim is to come up with an extremely simple concept that is easy to implement (logic-wise),  so I can focus on making the game look good. I'm a programmer by trade and the art side of things is a weak point for me. I'll be using Box2D for the first time too so the extra time will help in getting over the learning curve.

Looking forward to the challenge. Good luck, have fun :)

Obstacle concept

Quick and dirty concept for an obstacle
This is my idea of one of the obstacles in the game. The obstacles will be moving down toward the player(snowball) and try to melt it with the hot pointy bits :D I'll add some flame particle effects in there for good measure :D

Ice Platform

A random ice platform

An ice platform. Just trying to draw ice. Forgot to mention I'm using Photoshop for all my artwork.

Goals for today:

  1. Create player texture
  2. Create main platform texture
  3. Do a quick prototype to make sure it looks good on screen

Reworked obstacle texture

I'm much happier with this :D

Obstacles on fire!!

Added some fire particle effects to the obstacles. Can't melt a snowball without heat 馃槏  馃敟 馃敟馃敟

Oh and the stars actually look like stars now 馃槉

Oh, looks very nice and smooth!

Thank you! 馃槉

After some play-testing I've decided to make the incoming obstacles meteors instead. I think they'll look cooler馃槈

New stuff

  • Player HP - three hits and you're dead :D
  • Score count showing number of obstacles you've avoided
  • Pause button to... you know, pause the game :P
  • Background music and sound for score increase

Final touches

  • Main menu fluff - basically a "Start" button
  • Restart logic after dying - either restart or back to main menu
  • Credits for assets I don't own

Aaaand we're done! 馃榾馃榾

This has been really fun. I've added a main menu and background music. I'm pretty pleased with what I've done and I think it will do for this game jam. I've managed to accomplish all the goals I'd set out for myself, most important of which was to do all the art myself馃槃. Feel free to check out the finished product at https://kenkim.itch.io/snowy-night-mfgj

Have fun!!馃榿All critique is welcome!
