If your research time is specifically for the game jam, and you're choosing to do that instead of something else you could be doing (chores, etc), then it counts towards your 30 hour total for the project.
You get 30 hours total for the project, feel free to spread them out however you'd like. You can do one hour every day or spend more time on some days and none on others.
