Judge feedback

  • The music sync was very cute! I enjoyed that, and how continuously running felt like the "scream" was layering into the theme. I found the hitboxes to be a bit annoying, given the hurtbox went a good bit outside of where it felt. Especially since the character felt bounded by the hitbox rather than the standard "shadow hitbox" for isometric games. Also, the actual baiting of the enemies felt really annoying, and the spiders were miserable to predict. Otherwise, fun! I liked the artstyle and the enemy visual design.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
AAAAAAAAH!!! (8 As, 1 H, and 3 exclamation marks.) is a humorous take on the classic bullet-hell. The main character, an all but useless individual afraid of everything, finds themself in a dark pit of despair filled with all manner of nameless horrors.

WASD, Arrows, or Left Stick to Control. All you need to do is run and scream. Mouse for menu navigation.

Power-ups are available between levels, and tooltips are provided for descriptions.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
"You Are The Weapon"

As opposed to being powerful or skilled in some manner to make them a weapon, the character is extremely weak and afraid. However, their years of running and screaming prove useful in completing the task at hand and making it out alive.

You Are (Ironically) The Weapon

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Nothing in particular, but thank you for your time and for putting on these jams. Great fun to work on silly little games, no matter the outcome.

Much Appreciated.

I player through the 20 waves and I had a lot of fun with the game! At first it started out slow, but by wave 20 I felt like a panicked, squealing juggernaut. I like the upgrades and how they actually show up during the arena stage, while also allowing you to feel the effects. One thing  would like though would be to have a little bit more of an active role. I get the whole point of the concept is for you to just run around and leave the letters behind you, but after a while, if you hadn't given me the feel of powerful upgrades, it would have gotten a bit boring. Another thing is that it kinda got grindy at times. Some of the enemies were really slow and couldn't get hit by the letters before they dissappeared (echo + vibratio god tier combo). So yeah! I hope you can still develop onto the game and can't wait to play more of your stuff!

This is absolutely the exact issues I was realizing mid way through development. Hard to feel like you have agency with such a passive combat strategy. I do hope to improve it with more time and thought in the future.

Thank you for such a thorough review!
