Fantastic in every way. Being approachable & concise, with a super strong connection between themes & mechanics, IWCB would be a perfect entry game for partners new to the space, potentially coming from text rp, or a pair who always wishes their D&D campaign was more about getting their two melancholy characters to kiss after glorious slowburn. Onboarding is quick but powerful -- the map drawn at the beginning is a fantastic worldbuilding exercise that helps players establish tone & truths about the setting, & in our game, we continually updated the map as our story progressed, using it as inspiration & reference. The use of a standard deck of cards is another approachable aspect, & the prompts are creative & thought provoking while roomy enough for players to inject their specific vision. Absolutely replayable!
For the more seasoned roleplay pair, IWCB is a beautiful, lush journey to embark on together. Framed around the trope of The Monster in the Woods & the Lover in the Doorway, you'll explore the nature of loving the Other, & loving yourself as the Other. Be ready for heartache (we both shed tears) as well as heart healing queer magic. Grab an autumnal scented candle & some forest ambiance & let yourself submerge into a powerfully emotional experience that will leave you with stories to tell even as your leave the table.
Thank you!!
