I would recommend showing the puzzle area before you go through the instructions, and maybe even leading people through how to solve a puzzle, as I couldn't follow what any of it meant as I had no visual of what I would be interacting with, so then when I had the visual I didn't know what to do as I couldn't remember the instructions. I ended up winning the first puzzle by guessing and then after that I had no clue. I got to the wall puzzle, exited the game to reread the instructions in the menu, went back in, decided to try going around the wall (which ended with the "fabricate a crowbar" puzzle) and then I had no tiles for the puzzle (this was version BUGFIX 9-10). I exited back to the menu, went back into the game (in the submarine), went back to the wall and then the wall didn't have any tiles either. I then quit the game, launched it again, and the wall had tiles.
It took a while, and this is probably why no one has left comments on the game, before I figured out how to do the puzzles. I won a few through luck, which also reinforced incorrect ideas I had as to how the puzzles worked. It was only when I got super stuck on one I realised I may have been misinterpreting the information, and I was - you need to make it clear that you need to count the brown sides because I was counting the blue and green sides, and that you might not need to use all the tiles (or maybe that's a bug?). (Also, even though you do say "sides" in the instructions, because I didn't understand what I was doing at one point I was counting shapes.... It was utterly confusing.)
Once I understood how the puzzle mechanic worked it was fine and I didn't mind doing them as they weren't too hard.
As for bugs, there's also a bug where, even though I had repaired the voice box, when I went back there after going all the way to the mess hall, it wanted me to fix the box again... and once again the tiles were gone so I had to quit etc etc.
I went to the professor but got the message wrong so I had to go back to the city and then I super clicked, expecting it to be the "welcome to" message I'd seen a dozen times, and instead it was important story progression and I missed what they said. Luckily because this was bugged I could go back to the professor, give the right answer, and trigger the sequence again.
So, there are still bugs (that are technically game breaking), but I got to the end of the game. If you can't find them, although I imagine you will be able to, I would recommend giving the game to someone to play who hasn't played it before and watching exactly what they do.
Two smaller things to fix - first, stop the game from popping up the same text over and over when a player goes to an area. Let them see it once, because none of it is crucial to the game, and then leave it. You have to do a lot of moving around from area to area and it is frustrating to be interrupted by the same thing over and over. The other small thing is that there are typos scattered throughout.
Having said all of that, the art is amazing, as is the world building. I also liked the sound design. The characters were fun and all had distinct personalities (just make them pop up a little more slowly the first time you encounter them). I would happily spend more time in this world and play a longer game.
Great atmosphere! the visuals and sound design really amplified the story! The subtle parallax effect brings life to what could have been a static screen. I didnt know what to do for the puzzle, maybe a help screen would have been useful, although I think I saw one on the main menu.
Well done, your team has something to be proud of :)
Very nice! Great art, good engaging story. Fun mechanics. Puzzle could use a better tutorial but really cool.
