Hey nice graphics! The characters are pretty cute! As a suggestion, since you are working with pixel art, why don't you try to maintain the pixel-perfect resolution? This way the pixels are not resized and will not loose the hard edges. it is just my opinion :P Good work!

I really like the artwork and the music in this game.

Like most people, I get stuck at the box downstairs everytime, but other than that really good job :-)

Thanks for playing! I've just uploaded a patch to fix the bug, and after the ratings for the sppokjam are done I'm going to update with a bigger, "as initially intended" build to add a bit to the game.

Thanks again!

I love the graphics and the atmosphere! I played several times and in one of them I was stuck in the chest (I read that it has happened to more people), but overall, great work!

Thanks for playing, and glad you enjoyed the experience! Props to my artist Jen for all the amazing artwork! Can't thank her enough for making the game look so great!

I've recently patched the game and the box bug should be fixed now. Sorry about that! Some things get through in a 48 hour mad dash to meet the deadline, haha XD

Thanks again for playing! ^_^

Well, my first impression is the villain looks really wicked. It spooked me pretty good the first time I saw it, and died. Got the key on the second run, I was a bit surprised by that ending the game. I would've liked a bit more length/time to get to know our pumpkinheaded friend. But that tends to be the crux of game jams, so I don't hold that against the game too much.

So! I saw Tomer's comment mentioning getting stuck on a treasure chest. I didn't remember seeing one and got confused, and booted it up again. I now realize the key is randomly placed. I just happened to, in my run, have it spawn at the first possible location, so I beat the game in two seconds. But it turns out there's a good bit more to the level, and even at least one enterable room to explore. So I retract my comment about how short it is!

If there's anything I would've appreciated, it'd be a hide mechanic. Pumpkinboi is faster than you, so if you get stuck out on a long corridor with him chasing, you're just doomed. Unless there's a sprint, or there actually is a way to hide, that I missed. I didn't see a list of controls on the game page to confirm/deny.

Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed it, even if your first run was a bit short. The key does spawn randomly in one of the shiny loot spots. We initially wanted to add a bit of a story to make it longer but ran out of time. I'm working on a patch to update the game but I'm thinking to wait until the ratings are done. In the spirit of the jam I'd prefer to have what was submitted be what's rated, but after that I'm hoping to get those in.

Thanks again for playing! And stay posted ^_^

I love the cute pixel art, which is very well-done - the pumpkin-headed enemy is such a great sprite! The framing device of getting trapped in a witch's house after a bungled trick-or-treat is a fun way to add a narrative to the game and worked really well. One thing that might have improved the experience is a quick restart and a little more to do other than find a key in a randomly-selected container in the house. Nonetheless it was a fun experience and I hope you keep up with making lovely little games like this!

Thanks for submitting this game to the SCREAM JAM!

Thank you for the review! There was a short bit of story planned that would add a broader goal, but truth be told I'm a new programmer and a good 80% of this game was done in the last 2 days of submission :*D

I'm working on a patch to fix the chest bug, and will likely add the story we were looking to put in, and a bit more music for audio queues. I'm sort of hesitant to add it during the rating phase since I think the game I got up within the submission duration is what should be rated, but I'll refine this soon!

Thanks again for the review, and for setting up this jam! Happy Spooktober! ^_^

I touched a treasure chest and couldn't move anymore.

Other than that, this was a nice game :)

Yeah,  that box was rushed for the last 10 minutes and made a bit different from the other items. I'll try to fix that shortly.

Glad you enjoyed it though! One of my first jams being the solo programmer. Pretty tricky and my sleep schedule hates me now but worth it! Hats off to my artist and audio masters! They brought some crazy life to this project ^_^

The art in your game is so cute!

Thank! I have Jen to thank for that! This project wouldn't have looked nearly as good without her help! Not sure if she has an Itch account, but she deserves full art credit! ^_^
