I've been interested in trying out Unreal. I haven't done a lot of 3D game development, but I have made an arcade FPS before. Thing is...I don't like programming combat. At all. So I want to make a walking sim (you know, one of those first-person games that doesn't really bother with combat or puzzles and puts the focus solely on narrative with minimal interaction). Maybe I'd like some dialogue boxes, kind of like in a Bethesda or Obsidian game. And, of course, I wouldn't start it until I had the jam theme (admittedly, I already have a character and a setting), but I would like to make some practice projects to get the idea of how it works down. If that makes sense?
I was just curious if anyone had any tips or links to tutorials for a walking sim (or FPS tutorials, I think I can glean some info from those). How do I keep it engaging without typical gameplay elements (no combat, no puzzles, maybe some level interaction but nothing too much)? How do I get dialogue boxes and/or speech checks going? Again, I'm a beginner not just to Unreal but to 3D development in general, so bear with me. xD
