I tried very much so to advance past Stage 2, but the unpredictablility of the ball and the weird control layout really played a number on my already feeble ability to react to things. The instruction layout was very confusing and the added element of the LMB when the rest of the buttons were on the other side of the keyboard left me in the lurch as well. It just did not feel terribly responsive to me. Which is too bad, because I absolutely love the framing device (Nitori playing a video game) and how the art and sound design mesh together. The pixels are crunchy, the music is pleasant and the sounds are authentically bitty.

I do think the game is fair enough; it gives you a lot of lives to start with for sure, and you're able to correct mistakes if identified. I'm thinking after seven of these TH1 clones this Jam, it just might not be the type of game I am good at. But outside of the control scheme issues and my own issue of skill, this is a very nicely composed entry and I look forward to seeing your next one!

hey there! thank you for playing! :D sorry to hear you didn't like the game as much as you'd hoped :(

another guy left a comment about the unpredictability of the ball and when reflecting on that I think its probably because of how quickly the ball ramped up in speed. (I definitely could be wrong though). As for the issues about controls, I'll try to be more mindful about its scheme in the future! It never occurred to me that it could be uncomfortable to some since most of the games I play (on a keyboard) have a similar layout to that.

I'm really happy you enjoyed the art! it's one of the areas I feel like I've improved in a bunch! :> I'm surprised the sound design lived up to your standards however since I tackled that while crunching heavily

Again, thanks for playing my game and thanks even more for leaving some feedback! I always appreciate it!!! :D

Hitting the orb feels so wrong, there's no sense of direction, it just reacts as it likes, this could be so much better with improved mechanics. I thought the final boss was kagerou (?

sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as you'd hoped :< could you elaborate on what made you feel that way? I never felt as if the ball consistently reacted in an inconsistent way after hitting it (although chances are it's because I was the sole playtester so I got really familiar with how the ball works). Also, the final boss is Nitori!

Well, it had some akward movements and the ball got stuck into bumpers at some times, I did a recording about it if you like to see it, it's in spanish though.

I noticed you're using the cards alot, I didn't test that often, that might've been why you felt the way you did. I really oughta have some friends playtest my games during jams haha. Regardless, thank you for leaving a review, I appreciate it :>

Shoutouts for actually putting in the Touhou 1 slide kick. The other Touhou 1 likes I've played this jam haven't had it so far. This definitely felt the most accurate to the original game.

Developer

Thanks! Couldn't imagine touhou 1 without the slidekick since the regular kick isn't very good for hitting moving objects
