As for the graphics it depends on which version of rpg maker you use ! The older ones are pixel-art only, but the more recent ones are fine with with higher res (from XP on I think ?). I used rpg maker vx ace to make the game, I didn't have to do anything specific with the graphics, just make sure everything was the right size.
