In our case we did want it to be like vampire survivors purposefully, but with it split between the 'RPG' side and the 'roguelike' side. The vision for the 'full' game would be you'd get past the hallway then it would be back to RPG, and then back to combat again and so on and so forth.
Of course this was also based on what we wanted to try and replicate, but a great note that doing so removes a bit of the horror tension. I'm going to check out fear and hunger also!
