I think I just unintentionally made the second ending as bad as the first one. Infinite torture isn't anything new (think biblical hell or Greek mythology's Sisyphus or Tantalos), but being stuck with your partner for all eternity? Imagine how much you would argue with them. It's like The Jaunt by King, but for unhappy couples (and without teleportation).
