I really liked this Hades-like, and I feel the painting system is really creative!
The visuals are amazing. Despite being monochrome everything is very readable. There may be some problems with differentiating your inks, because there are too many shades that can be referred as “light gray” for example.
I liked how thematic the attack is. Although it’s hard to get at first that it needs to recharge and you shouldn’t spam it. A more disappointing issue is enemy navigation. It’s easy to break their pathfinding and they just stand in place. Boss was easily cheesed because of that.
It’s also not immediately clear why would you need paint. Probably because you get the boons pretty late into the game. And it’s quite possible to never get one connected to drawing and finish the game with a blank canvas. Maybe it the first room always gave you one it would be better.
I think if you were tasked to draw something specific, it would elevate this part of the game. Like, maybe some doors require some amount of specific color on a canvas, or NPCs give you some quest. Hell, I know it’s not a jam to propose this, but you could incorporate one of those AIs that can recognize what object is drawn by the player.
Overall, this is an impressive submission with a lot of potential for future development!
