What we did was simply choose a game engine and start playing around with it. The most important step is just getting started, even if you don’t know much at the beginning, that knowledge comes with experience. So, pick an engine and see what you can do! Participating in game jams is also a great way to learn, they are always really fun and the provide some great motivation to get started so we also recommend that.
