The shirt and cloak from the trader in Shady Spot are always a good call if you're not doing a pure mage build. Other than that I personally like the black katana, though the default longsword gives you a little bit of a higher chance to land the strong attack if you don't like relying on RNG too much.
(Also having the amulet of health makes you less addicted to chugging health potions, so that's another good option.)
