The bone aspect of the asset moves transforms. So it can work with 3D bones or with transforms in a hierarchy. This means that if your 2D bone solution relies on transforms it will work. Otherwise it won't.
That being said, the next update that will drop next week has a big rework and improvement on the bone system. So it may be worth waiting till then to implement it and try it in your project.
