Just played the game, very similar and fun too, why didn't i know about it earlier lol. Also, very impressive for a first attempt!
I would maybe alter the shield's transparency so the ship is easier to see. Maybe introduce each block to have a texture on top of each that goes up in the array depending on its damage (like cracks), as then seeing individual blocks fall off would be a lot more enjoyable to view or see why things broke the way they did I guess. Other than that keep it up.
