I love the idea and style of this game, but I'm pulling my hair out with the English language final version already, and I'm only on level 1 (1899). Can you help, please?

My big problem is that I'm stuck, seemingly unfairly. I set the machine according to the diary advice, throw the temporary lever, with my two friends helping but the machine over-heats. I repair the broken wires in the hall, but the machine overheats again and breaks those same cables, but the second time I can't fix them as they're said to be also fine. Perhaps I'm missing something?

There are some bugs/problems I spotted that take you out of the rich atmosphere. There seems to be no tracking of your two friends. They ask the same questions repeatedly, they magically appear in the workshop, knowing what to do, without me telling them. They at one point seem to be simultaneously in the living room warming their hands, whilst also being in the workshop panicking operating the cranks on the amp.

This is nit-picking perhaps. I would be happy to help you take another look through the English translation. There are some glaring mistakes, such as describing the  daguerreotype as "the bride with Leslie". The bride is female, and the groom is male. So it should be something from "A portrait of our wedding from twenty years ago, 1880" or "Leslie and myself, 1880" or "the bride and groom", etc.

One of the friends also exclaims "jeez!", which is American English, I believe. It certainly sounds wrong in the context.

This all said, I definitely would like to keep playing the game, but I'm completely stuck.
