Are you playing the game solo? The campaign is (somewhat) balanced for three heroes; page 18 has suggestions for modifying difficulty. Also, if you are playing solo, there are different rules available: https://blackfiskpub.itch.io/hero-of-cerulea

When using a ranged weapon, you can attack from out of danger and thus not risk losing hearts (at least for that round).

I'm using the solo rules but still dying a lot as they don't modify combat encounters. The problem is more the number of enemies than how strong they are.

I personally haven’t had that problem, but the goal of the game is to have fun—feel free to reduce the number of them, of course!
