Would it be a good idea to have a pen and paper next to me when I'm playing ?
Depends on how attentive to detail you are and how fast you pick up the gimmick. It wouldn't hurt, but I'm looking into a way to have something like it in-game, it's just not likely to work very well so the analog option is all you've got.
