Do you mean during the tutorial or the farm?

if you mean the tutorial zombies, sometimes they tend to drift away if you look around in the forest one might still be around.

If you mean the farmer quest, there are 12 zombies with an arrow on their head, they should be staying within the farm but due to the randomness its hard to predict where they end up sometimes. He would also so how many are left "12/12"
