I love the concept of text adventures but struggle to stick with them. I'm a very visual person so I do like a nice bit of art to set the atmos. I think the only one I've ever completed was The Hobbit, but I've played loads on the Spectrum.
You sound like you have a very similar background to myself. I always loved art, even if it was just a couple of vector lines and a flood fill.
