I also was unable to get any customers to trade in anything but someone tried to exchange a dirty bomb which i thought was extremely funny for some reason
Maybe my instructions weren't very clear. You click the customer and they have an item appear, then to turn in the item you select from the back room you have to click the bell to the right of the two stands, not the customer again
