Great job taking the variable coding for a spin. It gives me a sense of meaning to my actions as I progress. I’d suggest maybe breaking up some of your passages a little. A few seem to have a lot of story happening all at once, which can take the away the player’s ability to interact. Sometimes even just clicking an option to explore an object for more information before continuing provides immersion. It’s ok if you have direction in mind for the player to go, but think about how you can give them chances to learn more and interact with what is happening before you lead them to the next scene. In regards to your query about the story, I think you could actually do both at the same time by building the world out through the eyes of a newcomer. The environment can still be descriptive, building as the player goes in small bite-sized chunks, while the player takes on maybe a more straight-forward or simplified journey or task. Just a suggestion! Keep up the good work!
