Games like this in the old days were not designed the same way as this current trend. Hollywood Mogul always gave you the freedom to set up your career save the way you wanted. I'm also guessing you never used 'motherlode' in The Sims, huh? It exists to this day. The point is that not everyone who plays 'tycoon' style games wants to compete in an online leaderboard.
