Well, you should be able to tilt the spacecraft which will affect your altitude and you can try to use sudden shifts in your up/down direction to evade the bullets. Sorry for the late reply.
If you press Space immediately after spawning in you should get a good start. If the actual Space Button doesn't work, I imagine the problem is on your side, but I'll take a look in the code anyways.
