Anyone's free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a scene where you pet him in Ch 12? You do both hug twice before the concert if you're close enough, but no more than that. There are opportunities in chapter 7 and later chapters to pet him/scratch behind his ears if you're pursuing a closer relationship.
