Try it with a controller, it's easier, you just need to quickly press the button.
I've done it already. I made it apparent in the comments about a month or so back, the mashing part doesn't work on either my spacebar, or controller. I believe it was vixel that suggested a skip option to the quest to save people's keyboards.
